Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) based skin care products have become highly popular in recent years. Dozens of manufacturers sell over the counter skin care products containing AHAs. Lotions and creams containing AHAs may help to improve age spots, uneven pigmentation and fine lines. It is advisable to use a sunscreen along with AHA treatment because it may heighten the skin’s sun sensitivity.
Salicylic acid or Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) based skin care products can help to enhance the skin color and texture. These products exfoliate the skin by penetrating oil-laden openings in the hair follicles. This process also helps to reduce mild acne condition. BHA also appears to have a positive effect on skin that has suffered early aging due to sun exposure. Salicylic acid based products are available over the counter as well as by prescription.
Bleaching creams and lightening agents usually contain hydroquinone. These products help to reduce hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and freckles. If the patient requires a higher concentration of this ingredient, it is better to consult with a doctor and get it prescribed.
Vitamin A Derivatives
Many over the counter skin care products contain Retinol, which is a vitamin A derivative. Retinol can help to improve irregular pigmentation, wrinkles and fine lines, and skin tone, color, and texture. If the patient needs a stronger concentration of this derivative, the doctor may prescribe Retin-A or Renova, which contains a more active ingredient called tretinoin.
